If I wanted to tell people what to do with my source, I wouldn't be putting it out there, in the first place.

Once it is in the wild, it can't be "locked up," per se. What is in the wild tends to stay in the wild. If people want to squirrel away their own modifications, then fine. The more they do this, the harder it is to merge community improvements back in. Eventually, it becomes a different product. That doesn't bother me, with respect to my own contributions -- though, I can understand why some people might feel differently. We can work on different projects.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18163213862433540221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15434765.post-79375034218486930202010-06-03T08:33:41.312-06:002010-06-03T08:33:41.312-06:00The problem with your argument is that the purpose...The problem with your argument is that the purpose of using the GPL for a project's license isn't to gather the most developers -- it is to protect the freedoms to use, modify, and redistribute the software and its source code. More permissive licenses like the MIT or BSD-style licenses allow for the code to get locked up in proprietary software that does not allow modification or distribution.

While you might end up with a better written program using such permissive licenses (due to more developers willing to help), it is entirely possible that the end result will be something that isn't close to open source or Free Software.

Look at MacOS. It's based on a whole slew of software that was licensed under permissive licenses. While Apple does contribue a bit back to these projects, much of their "contributions" are effectively unusable on their own. Try running Darwin and see how much it has in common with MacOS and you'll see what I mean.Tony Lovascohttp://www.twistedlincoln.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15434765.post-64601679167994152712009-12-16T00:04:21.561-06:002009-12-16T00:04:21.561-06:00Congratulations, and good luck!Congratulations, and good luck!Matthew Weigelhttp://idempot.net/blog/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15434765.post-31157346885527808752009-11-14T13:00:39.782-06:002009-11-14T13:00:39.782-06:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15434765.post-24161555278719838962009-04-29T10:21:00.000-06:002009-04-29T10:21:00.000-06:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15434765.post-85096294219910672302008-11-17T14:46:00.000-06:002008-11-17T14:46:00.000-06:00I have the same reaction when I hear anything by W...I have the same reaction when I hear anything by Wang Chung ... oh no, wait, I'm thinking of suicide attempts, sorry.red-handedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16484549762594608774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15434765.post-21840545571938875882008-07-22T14:35:00.000-06:002008-07-22T14:35:00.000-06:00Ah, yeah. People would probably buy GTA4 with whatever on it. But it's definitely a factor: I never played Civ4 because of the horror stories from friends who did, for example. And there's even one game I worked on myself that I've never played after it was released (with Starforce protection).

And Tess, I'm one of those people. I have no-CD cracks for the games I own. Luckily, the country I live in hasn't made that illegal yet.

Interesting side note: Every PC game I've played in the last year has been a digital download.Ennohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05809329423417848910noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15434765.post-26401216360955444032008-05-19T19:49:00.000-06:002008-05-19T19:49:00.000-06:00Point taken, but the restrictiveness of DRM does n...Point taken, but the restrictiveness of DRM does not necessarily correlate with the inconvenience of the DRM. It's possible for DRM to be restrictive without disrupting normal usage patterns for paying customers.

For example, needing a CD in the drive is a disaster for laptop users. Unless someone is on an airplane (or otherwise off-net), a relatively quiet internet validation system is going to provide a much higher quality experience to a laptop user. I have known laptop users who would hunt down CD cracks for all of their games, to avoid having to haul an entire library of CDs around with them. My main problem is the linking of the animation part with the computer vision part :(. My partner gives me the coordinates obtained from the human model, but I'm a little bit confused afterwards!! I have planned to save them in the .X file! Do u think our approach is good?? Any suggestion or tips from our part will be the most welcome. Some of the features, in particular the boxes containing download links were copied directly from Audacity. Why? Because despite being a relatively minority interest software package it has some really high download statistics. It is currently the 11th most downloaded package on sourceforge, and at the time I was digging it was the most downloaded package that was not a file sharing client. Clearly they are doing something right.Al Riddochhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09620823824548261546noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15434765.post-64350587581766456342007-06-14T19:17:00.000-06:002007-06-14T19:17:00.000-06:00This is brilliant! Thanks for posting such cool thoughts.

I'd often thought about how men are trapped and disadvantaged by their sexism just as much as women are. Societies where women are still owned by their men and can be traded beaten or killed with impunity are obviously bad for the women, but also bad for the men. They are giving themselves a very raw deal, missing out on the other half of fertile imaginations, and the thrill of being equal partners on life's great exploration.

I am not a pink person. I tended to spurn such things. I'm a very sloppy geek person -- a gadget person.
